The Seven Deadly Online Course Sins “Successful” Course Creators Make

November 22, 2022

You’d think that hitting $100k, or $500k, or $1 million in online sales would mean you’ve MADE it, right? I mean, all of your revenue goals have come true! You’re awesome! You did it! Everything is PERFECT!

Only… so often, that ISN’T actually the case.

In fact, experiencing that “first taste” of success is often a dangerous place to be in. It’s very easy at this point in your online course business to fall into the “trappings” of success, and commit one of what we like to call the “Seven Deadly Experienced Online Course Creator Sins”.

I know, because I’ve been there myself.

In today’s podcast episode, we’ll be covering the Seven Deadly Experienced Online Course Creator Sins, why they are so common, and why I personally feel so passionately about helping others avoid them. So much so, that SOLVING these problems is a central pillar in our business rebrand!

Here’s the seven deadly ‘online business sins’ newly minted course creators that have had a taste of success fall into:

1️⃣ The Frankenstein Offer Suite

Thinking that the secret to capitalising on your success is to do more, often leading to a new suite of haphazard ‘frankenstein’ offer creations and a disjointed, confusing and overly complex product suite (and not to mention one tired, burnt out course creator!);

2️⃣ Chasing an Arbitrary Revenue Goal

Aimlessly shooting for an arbitrary revenue goal ($1 million on anyone’s wishlist?), resulting in ego-driven business decisions that don’t align with the lifestyle you set out to create in the first place;

3️⃣ Too Hard, Too Fast

Relentlessly scaling and becoming TOO successful too fast (yes, it’s a thing), creating operational and organisational chaos leading to diminishing delivery-side quality and resulting in reputational damage;

4️⃣ Following Someone Else’s Dream

Following a coach with a different business ethos to you, and accidentally building a business model that doesn’t align with YOUR business intent and the direction you want to take;

5️⃣ Confusing “Cashflow” For Wealth

Not knowing what you don’t know, and thinking that having a solid income in your business will be the thing that makes you wealthy (newsflash: it’s not, and just because you have more $$ in your course account than your client work one does NOT make you wealthy. It’s how much you KEEP and what you do with it outside of your business that creates long term wealth… And no-one’s talking about it!);

6️⃣ The Relentless Pursuit of MORE

Blindly chasing MORE front end sales, something that would have worked pre 2021 where leads, ad costs, and students were free and easy, is a dangerous and expensive game to play in 2022 and beyond. You’re caught between wanting to scale and not really doing what you love anymore. What’s it all for if all this ‘more’ also relies on more hours working, more time away from your little ones and loved ones and more moments missed?

7️⃣ Marketing Obsessed, Poor Delivery

Spending 80% of your time on front end marketing, and ignoring the client experience, resulting in “one and done” beta course builds that are never improved or updated, poor completion rates and lacklustre student results.

There’s nothing more painful, expensive or disappointing than experiencing your first taste of success and falling into one of the these common traps.

Often, it means spending months and years running in the wrong direction, only to end up with a business that is completely misaligned with the reason you started it for in the first place.

There’s a better way – and we’ve addressed this in our rebrand (we’re SO excited!)
